Spellbook, v1.6

One of the most requested features has finally made it into the Spellbook, D&D 3.5 app. You can now view spell lists & domains for all the standard casting classes. They are presented as collapsible lists, so you can click on the Level or Domain header to open or collapse a group of spells. You can also access the Menu to collapse or expand all spell groups. I’ve also added short descriptions to each spell in this view, as you would find in the Players Handbook. I hope this will make spell selection and planning easier.

I also added a What’s New dialog popup when you first launch the app or upgrade to a new version, which will inform you of any changes, and also addresses the most commonly asked question:
Q: Can you add more spells from the Compendium or other books?
A: Unfortunately only spells from the SRD are open gaming content. Spells from the Spell Compendium or any other book are copyright protected. If you do find additional Open Gaming Content, I’ll be happy to add it in.

If you open up to the first page of the Spell Compendium or PHB2 or other book with spells in it, you’ll find some legal information stating that the content can absolutely not be used without written permission. I’ve gone ahead and written in for permission, but Wizards of the Coast has not gotten back to me.

I hope you enjoy this new version. Next I’ll be adding sorting by class and level for spells you’ve added to your spellbook.

Happy gaming!

Really great update, thank you! I feel like this app is complete! Now, I just need to get my group for another DnD session; we’re all so busy with school and work!

I understand the whole copyright issue of adding closed content spells to the app, but what if we were to add the spells on our own, would that clear up some legal liability risks and liabilities for you? Such as a feature to add in custom spells. I can imagine that it wouldnt be a problem because this app acts as a personal database, and the user wont be able to redistribute the program. Also, it assumes the player must own the DnD supplement if they added the spell into the database. Idk, its something to think about.

Thank you for a wonderful app,

Great update. Thanks for your hard work. I know we geeks appreciate it.

Hope WOTC gets back to you too.

Hi, this is brilliant. Have you thought of adding the psionics powers from the expanded psionics handbook. The are in the SRD I have.

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback!

@Doughnut Yea, I’m exploring a few different ways that one might use to add their own spells. I think it’s pretty much the best solution to the problem, especially since I probably won’t be able to add all the spells everyone uses, even if WOTC does give me permission, and I even know a few people who make their own spells. It’ll probably take a while to get that in though.
Gah, I haven’t played D&D for a long time myself now! Our game seems to be cursed, and our other group just switched to Ars Magica to try that out.

@Will I’ve gotten a few requests for Psionics (though not a lot). To be honest, I’ve never played a psionic class, short of a 1 session stint as a Soulblade, though in one of our campaigns we had a Wilder who was pretty awesome (though by the end he just sort of blew up a lot, killing everything else around him). I’ll have a look at the psionic powers to see how they are structured, and how they might fit into the app. Not making any promises though :(
Would you rather have it be part of the Spellbook app, or would you like to see a Psionics app?

How about expanding the app into an all-in-one D&D reference app? Preload it with feats, spells, classes, monsters, etc. from the SRD, and include an “add your own” function for content from other sources. Optionally, an expansion of the spellbook function that would essentially be a collection of bookmarks to entries relevant to a character would be nice.

I know that would all be a lot of work, but I think it would be an excellent direction for an already impressive app to move in.

Would be cool… if only I had the time :-/
Unfortunately a lot of the data differs in ways that require their own attention, so it would take a good amount of time to get all that in there. I decided to focus on spells only, and that’s already taking a lot of my time, and there are a bunch of features that have yet to make it into the app.
I totally see the value in getting the rest of the SRD in there (Monsters alone would help me out a bunch in planning and running my game), but I don’t think it’ll happen any time soon.

  7. Thx for the newest patch, it is great! It would be wonderful if you could segregate spells into magic schools, like evocation and transmutation.

Could you add support for the following:
    Add your own spells
    Add your own class list

If you did so I would gladly pay for this :)

Ah, snap, I didn’t think about adding classes… Actually, that makes the whole ‘adding your own spells’ thing even harder. Damn. But I guess it sort of needs to be in there. I guess it’ll just take some time to get in there.

So to answer your question: yes, but it’ll take a while.

Hey, I’m a developer and I am kindof interested in getting into android development. I was wondering if I would be able to contribute to the pathfinder version to maybe get my feet of the ground.

    Let me know,

    Hey GarThor,

for now I’m gonna keep the Pathfinder stuff private, as I’m actually going to have it be a paid app (since Pathfinder is much more current than 3.5, and I have to justify these hours somehow :) ).

However, there have been several requests to make other parts of the srd available in a similar fashion (say, monsters, or psionics). If you’re interested in working on something like that, let me know, and we can discuss it.

I’ve see this app on a friends Samsung Galaxy S, and from the looks of it, it seems brilliant! Thou i have to ask, is there a way for you to make it work on smaller screens as well? i’ve got a HTC Tattoo, and can’t find it in the market :(

Also, i was wondering if there was a possibility to have a look at the source? since i’m in the process of making a similar app for Pathfinder…

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I’ll try to get that fixed.
